miles. Track speed for this line is 49 mph and the line features
115 to 136 pound rail throughout. The line is dark territory and

The original layout of the Weldon will draw some
interest while touring this line. Originally SAL (Seaboard Air
Line) owned the line from Norlina, NC to Portsmouth, VA. ACL
(Atlantic Coast Line owned the route that passed over the SAL in
Weldon. Both of these lines crossed the Roanoke River on
huge spans in Weldon. The map below shows what the connection
looked like prior to the merger of ACL and SAL. The abandoned SAL
span in Weldon is still easily seen from U.S. 301.
