North Carolina & Virginia Railroad

The NC&VA is a shortline based in Ahoskie, NC.  The line runs south from a connection at Boykins, VA with CSX to Kelford, NC.  The line then swings north through Ahoskie and continues through Tunis to the new Nucor Steel Plate factory on the Chowan River.  The line sees a daily freight to and from the Steel Mill as well as a local job that serves other various businesses along the route.  The daily freight makes a connection with the CSX at Boykins usually between 10:30-12:00 in the afternoon which makes this line and train easy to chase and photograph at multiple locations.  Currently the railroad has 12 locomotives on its roster and usually 3-4 of them can be found in Ahoskie with an additional 3-4 on the road freight.

Typical Traffic & Volume

NC&VA's biggest customer by far is the Nucor Steel mill along the Chowan River near Coefield, NC.   The railroad runs a daily train from the plant to the CSX connection at Boykins, VA with CSX.  At the junction NC&VA meets CSX train F774 (Rocky Mount, NC to Boykins, VA turn).  The best place to catch the NC&VA action would be Boykins, VA.  If you arrive around 10:30 a.m. you should be able to catch the arriving NC&VA empty steel plate train and also the arriving CSX F774.  After the interchange it's very easy to follow the NC&VA south to Kelford, NC and then NE towards the Nucor plant north of Ahoskie, NC.  As with all railfan chases I would highly recommend getting a copy of a topographical atlas for both NC and VA.
