Turning Amtrak San Diegans at Washington Street Wye
San Diego, California
1981-1982

Until Amtrak started push-pull operations with the San Diegan trains in the mid 1980s, each train had to be turned at the end terminals so that the engine could be in front for the next run. This seemingly mundane operation offered an interesting subject while I was studying photojournalism at San Diego City College in late 1981 and early 1982. One particular train would arrive at San Diego just before the end of my work day at nearby Solar Turbines Inc., and by heading to the wye at Washington Street immediately after work, I got the chance to photograph the move on several ocations. These images are the best of the pictures from this effort.
