Description:
One of
Amtrak's busiest stations, Chicago Union Station
handles about 54,000 people daily. The station
is a terminal for many eastern and western signature
Amtrak routes including the Empire Builder,
California Zephyr and Lake Shore Limited. The
station also serves many Metra lines. Ogilvie
Transportation Center, another terminus for Metra
trains, is located across the street (Madison
Street). Metra's LaSalle Street and Millennium
Park terminus stations are also within walking
distance of Union Station.
Chicago
is the 3rd largest intermodal port in the world,
second only to Hong Kong and Singapore (even
surpassing New York City). Chicago Union
Station is at the heart of the Chicago passenger
transportation hub as well as Chicago's commercial
center. The station is within one block
of the Chicago Loop providing easy connections to
Chicago L trains, Chicago water taxis, cabs, busses,
and limos. Three international airports are
all accessible by from Chicago Union Station or the
Chicago 'L' (subway) stops surrounding it.
O'Hare is accessible via the CTA ('L') blue line
subway (24/7) and Metra's North Central Service line
(weekdays), Midway from the CTA ('L') orange line,
and Milwaukee (General Mitchell) from the Amtrak
Hiawatha (also departing from Union Station). |
