Note: Horns are mounted in different spots on different locomotive types. Therefore, there are slight audible differences from locomotive type to locomotive type. For example, a K5LA in good condition on a P42 will not sound exactly the same as a K5LA in good condition on an NPCU or F59PHI.

Classifications:

K5LA Hybrids have a standard #3 bell in place of the usual #3A bell (in reports up to the end of 2007 these are listed as "New K5Ls").
In late 2008, Airchime recast the bells for all of their K horns in an effort to improve intonation. As a result, all horns on this page classified as "new" K5LA's are now classified as "second generation" models as "new" K5LA's are now considered to be the recast horns. If and when Amtrak receives any of these retuned K horns, they will be referred to as "third generation" horns.

Excellent condition: The horn is fully functional and the tuning is very good.

Very good condition: The horn is fully functional and is mostly in tune.

Good condition: The horn is fully functional but there may be some slight variations in the pitches that certain bells (notes) play. Any clearly noticeable differences will be noted.

Fouled: The horn has one bell that is partially or completely clogged, resulting in either the bell producing a squealing sound or not playing at all. All fouled bells will be noted.

Severely fouled: 2 or more notes on the horn do not play; those notes will be identified.

2nd July: In the 28th June 2010 update, it was reported that returned to service P40 815 had a First Generation K5L with a fouled #4 bell. This report was in error, as the locomotive with that horn is actually returned to service P40 831. Thus, the entry for 815 in the updates list, as well as that in the general horn listing, has been removed.
2 July: In the 28th June 2010 update, it was reported that the condition of the horn on P32-8 519 was unchanged. This is in error, as the #5 bell on 519's K5LA no longer squeals. As a result, the status confirmation was removed from the updates section.
