Monterey, Indiana, 7/3/86
My friend, John McLaughlin insisted I take this trip with him.
But I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see two ex-CS (C&O) SD18s.
C&O GP18s #1800 through #1818 (Yes, 19 of them!)
were built in early 1963.
Chessie System rebuilt and repainted them, and renumbered them #7300 through #7318.
The Tippecanoe Railroad had two of them at this time, #7302 and
#7311.
EMD built them with trucks from traded ALCo RSD-5s.
This was on the truck frame, so CS probably rebuilt the trucks too.
This was an ex-EL, exx-Erie, station.
The Tippecanoe Railroad operated the ex-EL, exx-Erie, main line from at least Monterey to
North Judson (about 16 miles) in order to serve
a large grain facility.
See http://hvrm.railfan.net/CKIN/ckin_index.html for more current information on this line.
A numberless,
but not nameless caboose and
RS-11 #6001
were also present.
Then ex-C&O M4000 arrived pulling a weed sprayer.
John somehow cajoled the men operating the weed sprayer to
give us a ride in the SD18s. That picture window was great.
Here's the crew. I wish I could remember their names. I think they were brothers.
And, here's John McLaughlin.
