THE PAINT SHOP

WELCOME!!

This is a good place to see projects that are awaiting their turn in the paint booth, for projects that are currently in the paint booth or painting projects that have just been completed.

INFO ABOUT THE BOOTH:

The paint booth itself was built by a friend of mine, Christopher T. Palmer of CTP Design and Creation (http://www.ctpdesign.com). The booth enclosure is a translucent polyethylene "tote" box laid on it's side with a Dayton explosion proof blower mounted to the back (which was the bottom of the tote) and is exhausted to the outside via 3" flexible hose and a 4"dryer vent through the wall. There is a 100 watt halogen flood lamp mounted above the booth for illumination. The working area inside the booth is 22"W x 15"H x 12"D and features a 12" diameter 'Lazy Susan' turntable for hands free painting. The blower changes the air approximately 30 times per minute and uses standard furnace filter media to trap any stray paint particles before exhausting the fumes to the outside.

The booth is full in these pics!

To the left in the top pic are the two smokestacks from the Sierra Co-Gen plant. These have been painted white and will be masked and painted with alternating bands of red paint for visibility to low flying aircraft.

In the back is a PFE 57' mechanical reefer also painted white. PFE painted these cars white as well as yellow and orange. I already have a completed orange car that sees occasional service on the CSRR. Some time ago I painted another one yellow when I was shooting that color for another project much like the white one pictured here. I usually paint cars for future use in batches and store them for when I have time to decal them which I also do in batches. This also allows the paint to cure without excess handling. I find it easier to do it this way rather than working on individual cars to completion. It also enables me to place several 'new' cars in service on the CSRR at one time.

In the front of the booth is 62' tankcar that has been painted for Buffalo Electro Chemical Co. The original BECCO Peroxide cars were 42' with a solid gray tank and black underframe and running gear. I wanted a unique tank car so I shot this Athearn car white with a black band around the center section with the manhole. The underframe is also black along with the running gear. When completed it will be quite striking with bold black lettering on the white tank along with all the attendant car data decals.

The bottom pic is a close up of the PFE reefer and BECCO tank car and their underframes.
