The EuroCity "Diplomat" flies past Stuttgart Nordbahnhof on its way to Mannheim.
InterCityExpress trains typically travel 200 km/h (125 mph) or faster on the "Neubaustreke," or new high speed track between Stuttgart and Mannheim. This stretch of track, KBS 771, was the first part of Germany's massive high speed rail project to open.
An original InterCityExpress begins its climb up the Geislingen Steige.
DB 181-211, the Lorraine, was the only locomotive I saw on this trip that was not in red. The good old days of the Deutsche Bundesbahn have been replaced by a sea of verkehrsrot and white.
BR 181-218, leading the EC 266 into Karlsruhe, is in the old red livery. Somehow, the 181 always looks sad when it’s painted it red; I’m not sure why.
