The CSX Greenwich
Subdivision extends from
Greenwich in the west through
Olmsted Falls in the east. This
section of The Railfan Gallery
will feature three fine small
town railfanning locations on
the Greenwich Sub, including
New London, Wellington, and
Grafton. (reference this map).
There are several locations in
New London that are good for
railfanning, but two of them
deserve specific mention.
The first of these is on the
northern side of the New
London Reservoir. From the
elevated bank of the reservoir
you get a very nice view of the
tracks below. In warm
months I have brought a lawn
chair and some sunblock, and
spent several hours here.
The other spot is best suited
for photographic use. The
bridge on Bigelow Parkway
offers a great view of the CSX
mainline as well as the W&LE
track that joins the main. You
can park briefly on the berm at
either end of the bridge, get
the shot, and move on. This is
NOT an area fit for children!
See this map for more New
London railfan info.

Wellington, like New London, has a large man - made reservoir with raised banks bordering the CSX Greenwich
Sub tracks. The view from the bank of the reservoir is interesting, but there is a pole line running along the
reservoir side of the tracks and the wires are a major distraction in photographs. Some decent views can be had
from track level at the base of the reservoir hill.
Across the tracks from here is the Lorain County Fairground. A portion of the perimeter road runs next to the
tracks and there are a couple large shade trees for shelter from the sun. The Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad
tracks connect to the CSX main here.
East of the reservoir are several grade crossings with places to stop and park nearby. There is a public parking
lot next to the grade crossing at Route 18 (W. Herrick St.) where you can park and explore on foot. There is also
parking near the crossing at Route 58 (N. Main St.). View a Google Map of Wellington railfan spots here.
Grafton is the most compact of these three towns, offering few railfan venues. The grassy area along Cleveland
Street is available for railfan use. Good sight lines both east and west.
Across the tracks is a CSX Maintenance of Way Yard. The large gravel area at the entrance to the yard off of
Becker Court is CSX property, but so far as long as you park well out of the way and stay out of the main portion
of the yard it is not likely you will be hassled by anyone.
Farther south along Railroad Street is a feed mill for which CSX provides grain hopper delivery and switching.
You might catch the local working there generally in the morning.
