This page is an attempt to list the regular work and locations of each class of locomotive and car in the present day Amtrak fleet in the form of a European style stocklist.
The allocations below refer to regular services; locomotives and cars may operate as substitutes on routes other than those listed when the regular locomotive or car type is not available. Locomotives and cars are moved around the system as part of regular passenger trains in order to move them from one location to another for maintenance or other purposes.
An attempt is made to list the Operating Pool and Maintenance Allocations of each locomotive. It should be noted that short term changes of allocation do occur regularly and that this page attempts to show the longer term allocations. Locomotives at workshops for routine overhauls are still considered to be on the roster. Those out of service for longer term at workshops, for example those with wreck or fire damage, are considered as "off roster". From time to time other locomotives may be off roster in the short term when used for special trains, private hire etc.. See the "Key to Abbreviations" section below for an explanation of the locomotive table lists.
There are several variations in the type designations used for Amtrak locomotives. On this site the designations used are those most commonly used by Amtrak. There are alternative forms of these designations and no version can be considered as wholly correct or in-correct. Alternative designations are listed here in the data for each type.
This information has been gathered from notes posted on several websites, bulletin boards and discussion lists, from Amtrak and USDOT/STB public documents and from the observations of myself and others.
This page is intended to supplement the information held on other sites, I have avoided duplicating information found elsewhere; therefore this page has no photographs or data that can be found elsewhere, except where it is relevant to be shown here.

KEY to Abbreviations and Tabled Lists of Locomotives
Abbreviations:
ACSES - Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System, Cab signalling system, NEC lines Washington DC - Boston
FY - Financial/Fiscal Year (US), accounting period in the USA from October 1st to September 30th. This is numbered with the year of the month at the end of the period, for example FY2007 runs from October 2006 to the end of September 2007.
HEP - Head End Power, electrical power from locomotives providing supply for car air conditioning and heating.
MoW - Maintenance of Way, track and infrastructure works.
ITCS - Incremental Train Control System, a cab signalling system on Amtrak lines in Michigan.
NEC - North East (Corridor). Boston MA - Washington DC and adjoining lines within an area bounded by Newport News VA, Richmond VA, Harrisburg PA, Niagara Falls NY and Portland ME. Note the definition of the "NEC" varies according to context and when used elsewhere may refer to only some parts of this area.
NPCU - Non-Powered Cab Unit, former locomotive converted to an un-powered cab control car.
PTC - Positive Train Control, a cab signalling system on trial in Illinois.
In general, US Railroad terminology is used on this site whenever possible.

Paint Scheme
Amtrak standard paint schemes are generally refered to as Phases. There are also special paint schemes for certain services (Acela, Cascades, Pacific Surfliner, California) and there are/were some local variants to the standard schemes (Northeast, Downeaster)
R - Rainbow Era [extinct], a modification of paint schemes inherited from other railroads at the time of the formation of Amtrak in 1971. These soon disappeared and now no active locomotive carries any of these schemes.
I - Phase I [extinct] (red nosed and/or reverse arrow symbol), introduced in 1972. No active locomotive remains in this scheme.
II - Phase II [extinct] (red, thin white, and blue), introduced in 1976. No active locomotive remains in this scheme.
III - Phase III (red, white, and blue stripes equal height), introduced in 1980 and continued to be applied to most new locomotives outside of the Northeast until mid-1997. Overhauled locomotives continued to be repainted in this scheme until early 1999. No active locomotives remain in this scheme, P42DC 32 was the last, running in Phase III until June 2005. Some NPCUs and passenger cars still carry this scheme. Some Midwest NPCUs have retained Phase III following repainting in 2005/6.
IV - Phase IV (two small red and white stripes over large navy band), introduced in 1994. A modified version was applied to new Northeast based locomotives in 1997. 13 new P42DC's and 8 new P32ACDM's were delivered in Phase IV. Overhauled P40s and P32-8s and NPCU conversions were repainted in this scheme from January 1998 to end of 2000. P42DCs were repainted in this scheme during overhauls from early 1999 to the end of 2000. The last P42DC in Phase IV, 82, continued to carry this until April 2005, and the last P32DM, 713 carried this until November 2004. It continues to be carried by some P32-8s and one NPCU. Most of the stored P40s remain in this scheme. Most passenger cars are in this scheme or the Phase IVb variant.
IVb - Phase IVb, a modified version of Phase IV (different shade of blue, a low down red stripe), introduced in 2002. This has only been applied to passenger and baggage cars.
V - Phase V, based in the Acela livery of teal and blue, was introduced in 2000. Amfleet-I car Capstone refurbishments were painted in a variation of Phase V but now are being repainted in Phase IVb. All recent switcher repaints, as well as new switchers, are in a variant of this scheme. Overhauled P32-8s and some NPCUs have been repainted in this scheme from early 2006. From November 2006 a variant of Phase V with Downeaster markings has been applied to overhauled Downeaster NPCUs.
Va - Phase Va [extinct amongst those running in service]. An early version of Phase V on P42DC locomotives, known as Phase Va, was applied to new P42DCs from September 2000 to May 2001 (a total of 46). Some overhauled P42DCs (a total of 13) were repainted to Phase Va between January and June 2001. The remains of two wrecked P42s at Beech Grove retain original Phase Va. All other Phase Va P42DC's have become due for overhaul and have been repainted in Phase Vb. #162 was the last Phase Va to remain in service (until July 2006). #151 was the last Phase Va to be repainted to Phase Vb (in 2007, after being out of service in Phase Va from September 2001).
Vb - Phase Vb. A later modification of Phase V appeared from mid-2001, known as Phase Vb; this reduced the height and width of the lower red band and omitted cab side logos. This was applied to new P42DCs from June 2001 and on repaints of P42DCs, P40s and P32ACDMs from July 2001.
"I", "II", "III", "IV" - 40th Anniversary Retro schemes, 2011. To mark the 40th Anniversary of the formation of Amtrak, various units were repainted in 2011 in schemes derived from the orginal Phase I to IV schemes.

Locomotive and Train Set Operating Pools
Pool Summary.
Most Amtrak diesel services are operated by General Pool(IC) P42DCs and electric services by AEM-7, HHP-8 or Acela Express units. Semi-captive pools of P42DCs work in New England and Michigan. P32-ACDMs work on the Hudson Valley route, F59PHIs work in California and the Pacific Northwest and P32-8s operate mainly on the West Coast, in the Midwest, the NEC and in Florida.
These pool codes are not official Amtrak codes. They are produced here to allow for their use in the tabulated lists of locomotives on this page only. They reflect Amtrak's actual fleet maintenance and operational assignments rather than any official designation. Until 2007 Amtrak divided its' road locomotive fleet into operating pools - NEC (North East Corridor), Intercity (and Midwest) and West - but this has ceased. Operating Pools do still exist in practice as locomotives are assigned to trains according to type, technical variations and maintenance allocation.

Locomotives in the IC General Pool are also used as substitute power on trains normally worked by other pools and can appear on any diesel operated service except for the Empire route between Albany NY and New York Penn and on ITCS equipped routes in Michigan. They regularly work on trains assigned to the NA (NEC Albany) Pool.
Locomotives from the former AW (West Coast) Pool now regularly operate on other routes.
Locomotives from the NA (NEC North) now occasionally work on trains of other pools.
Locomotives from the MI (Michigan ITCS) Pool regularly also work on routes of the IC General Pool, but are more common on trains to and from Chicago.
NA pool (NEC North) routes are operated by a mix of NA and IC General Pool locomotives.
Locomotives from the PS (Surfliner) Pool are regularly loaned to work as part of the CS (Cascades) Pool. Transfer moves between the two pools are made on the Coast Starlight. They do not normally operate on the routes of any other pools.
Locomotives from the CS (Cascades) Pool do not normally operate on the routes of other pools.
Locomotives from the CA (Amtrak California) and PM (Piedmont) Pools are financed or part-financed by their respective States (California and North Carolina) and only leave their home States on very rare occasions.
Locomotives from CD and MS pools (P32-8s) regularly operate as substitute power on routes in the Mid-West and the West Coast.
Some locomotives in NS and NN (NEC South and NEC North MoW) Pools are also used for switching and as protect power. See notes on each locomotive type for details. These two pools are considered by Amtrak as one pool, but individual Northeast switchers and MoW locomotives generally keep to within either of the North or the South sections of the NEC due to a restriction on diesels running through New York City tunnels. GP15s from the NS Pool also work at Sunnyside NY and New York Penn.
Maintenance Allocation
Base for Periodic Maintenance.
The location codes for maintenance bases are those used by Amtrak, although the allocations are not marked on the locomotives or cars (in the past some F40s carried Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston allocation markings).
Note: From October 2008 the locomotive overhaul process, previously performed as one process at Beech Grove, is now programed as separate processes at differing intervals and most elements of this work are now performed in Chicago.

121 and 122 were built as replacements for wreck damaged P40s.
Most of the P42DCs or “Genesis” class are in one common pool and work on most parts of the Amtrak system, however some are allocated to specific traffic. They are the usual power on all Amtrak diesel hauled trains except for Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, most Surfliners, Cascades, Piedmonts and in the Hudson valley, although they may be used as substitute power for many of these as well. Three or four P42DCs are currently operating from Oakland on Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin services. They are also used to provide power for some excursion trains.
On many long distance runs they usually work singly or in multiple with 2 or 3 locomotives depending on the route. Prior to the cessation of the Mail and Express traffic up to 5 locomotives were used on some trains. On some Mid-West routes they operate in push-pull mode with a single P42 on one end and either a second P42 or a non-powered cab unit on the other. On the Downeaster and Heartland Flyer services they operate push-pull mode with ex-F40PH NPCU cab car on the other end. On the Vermonter they operate with a P42DC on each end, and on the Springfield MA - New Haven shuttle they operate with an ex-Metroliner cab car.
Two P42s, 143 and 149, were severely damaged in a wreck in Utah in September 2001. They have been partially broken up at Beech Grove.
Overhauled and some damage repaired locomotives have been fitted with a modification involving a replaceable bolted-on nose section. These were first fitted to 128, 121 and 103 in early 2004 (as a trial?). From November 2004 this became a standard modification to all overhauls and most damage repairs.
For a period in late 2005 and early 2006 a number of overhauls were completed without this modification: 33, 38, 150, 160, 161, 164, 177. Soon after overhaul 38 returned to Beech Grove for damage repairs and was then fitted with a modified nose.
From 2007 a revised version of this modification appeared, this has a modified mounting for the headlights without a cover glass. This first appeared on 197 in July 2007 and became standard for overhauls and many repairs from October 2007.
A program to fit a video camera in the cab front window commenced in 2007 and was completed for all of those in service by late 2009.
In FY2005 forty were overhauled :

The IC General Pool is allocated for maintenance to Chicago.
1 to 25, 38 to 49 were allocated to New Orleans until mid 2006 when their maintenance allocation was moved to Chicago.
101 to 111 were allocated to Albany-Renn NY for maintenance, but regular visits to Chicago from mid-2008 suggest that these too may now be part of the Chicago allocation. They normally work in the North East and the majority of them are usually to be found there, but they do operate outside of their former captive area.
From new until early/mid 2008 112 to 120 were allocated to Los Angeles for maintenance and were mainly confined to working the Coast Starlight between Los Angeles and Seattle, but more recently they operate throughout the system at times.
From early 2005 until early/mid 2008 121 and 122 were also allocated to Los Angeles for maintenance and were mainly confined to working the Coast Starlight between Los Angeles and Seattle, but now operate throughout the system.
IC General Pool P42s operate on:
All routes to/from Chicago IL, (to/from Seattle WA, Portland OR, Emeryville CA, Los Angeles CA, San Antonio TX, New Orleans LA, Washington DC, and all Midwest Services) except Michigan Services. On services between Chicago and New York they operate to/from Chicago IL with a change of power to/from electric locomotives at Washington DC on the Cardinal, and change to/from Dual Mode P32s at Albany NY on the Lake Shore Limited.
All services south of Washington DC (to/from New Orleans, Richmond VA, Newport News VA, Charlotte NC, Miami FL and Savannah GA). Those to/from New York City change to/from electric locomotives at Washington DC (see note below).

They can work as substitutes on almost any other diesel route other than the Michigan ITCS route and the Hudson Valley line south of Albany NY.
For maintenance change-overs P42s occasionally run on trains between Philadelphia and Washington DC and between New Haven and Boston South.
On cab car push-pull trains a second locomotive may substitute at times for the cab car.

MI - Chicago ITCS
26 to 37, 126 to 128 are ITCS fitted for working Michigan routes from Chicago IL except the Pere Marquette, but also they operate on other routes from Chicago. They operate all trains between Chicago and Battle Creek; the Detroit Pontiac trains and the Blue Water. During times that the ITCS system is out for upgrade work these units are liable to run on other parts of the system.

NA - NEC New England
101 to 111 were allocated almost exclusively to the Northeast until mid-2008. They were moved in 2003 from the Harrisburg line to duties in New England as replacements for stored P-40s. They are fitted with ACSES cab signalling.
Since mid-2008 they have been roaming away from the Northeast much more than in the past, although the majority of them are usually operating in New England.

AW - West Coast (Los Angeles)
112 to 122 were based on the West Coast they usually worked on Trains 11/14, the Coast Starlight (Los Angeles CA - Seattle WA) and Surfliner 799/798. 112 to 120 were in this Pool since new, while 121 and 122 were transfered to this Pool in early 2005.
From early/mid 2008 they began operating throughout the system and no longer appeared to be confined to West Coast trains.

F40PH 200 to 229 were built new for Amtrak.
F40PHR 230 to 409 were built with parts from former class SDP40F locomotives.
F40PH 410 to 415 were acquired in 1990 from GO Transit, Toronto, Canada, previously being GO510 to 515.
Once a large class of 216 locomotives, none remain in Amtrak passenger service, other than those converted to non-powered cab units (NPCU). For details of those converted to NPCUs see separate section below.
Fifteen former Amtrak F40PHR's were planned to be converted at Beech Grove to F40M-3F and leased by Amtrak to the CDAC (Canadain American RR) - for details see below.
In 1998 some (including 242, 281) were leased to UP for a short period.
Many of these locomotives were stored out of use at Beech Grove IN from around 1997/8, nearly all have now been scrapped or sold. Rail World Locomotive Leasing acquired Amtrak's leasing business in early 2002; at that time most those on existing leases (except those with MBTA and Conn DOT) along with 51 more F40's were acquired by Rail World LL. 14 of these were reported as sold to Titan Rail in March 2006.
The last regular workings on Amtrak passenger services were those leased to MBTA Boston being moved between Albany NY and Boston MA as extra locomotives on the Boston section of the Lake Shore Limited. The last one to be leased to MBTA was 316; when the lease ended in April 2003 it was sent on Trains 49/449 and 40 from New England to Philadelphia via Chicago and then to Wilmington DE.
In December 2003 when F40’s 265 and 291 returned from lease to ConnDOT. They were sent from New Haven CT on 14th Dec to Wilmington/Bear DE, running light to Boston MA, then on Train 449/49 to Chicago arriving on 17th Dec, then on Train 40 arriving Philadelphia on 19th Dec.
In March 2006, 316 was in the consist of train 51 of 23rd March from Washington DC to Chicago and train 48 of 24th March from Chicago to Albany NY then on train 448 to Boston for delivery to MBTA.
Until mid 2003 a few of those stored at Beech Grove were used occasionally on car maintenance moves between Beech Grove and Indianapolis or Chicago (407 in May 2003). 406 was reported to be in operational condition at Beech Grove at the end of 2003 and was still there in September 2009. Some other units remain in store on Amtrak property at Bear DE.
In late 2006 278 and 413 were moved from storage at Bear DE to Beech Grove for conversion to NPCU.
In 2011 406, which had been stored at Beech Grove for some time, was converted at Beech Grove to an HEP Generator NPCU for use in connection with Amtrak Anniversary Display Trains.

CDAC / MMA F40s
Note: CDAC is now part of MMA (Montreal Maine Atlantic Railroad) owned by Rail World Inc.
Fifteen former Amtrak F40PHR's were planned to be converted at Beech Grove to F40M-3F and leased by Amtrak to the CDAC (Canadain American RR). Fourteen were completed and twelve of these were sent to the CDAC. Two remained at Beech Grove until they were sold on. The fifteenth was never converted and was believed to have been scapped at Beech Grove. Both Amtrak's leasing business and the CDAC were acquired by Rail World Inc. in early 2002, although the ownership of the CDAC units remained with Amtrak. The CDAC was later merged into the MMA (Montreal Maine Atlantic Railroad).
F40M-3F's have now been sold on to other operators.
A number of unconverted Rail World F40PH/PHRs were later sent to the MMA. They were stored for some time then stripped with their power units being reconditioned for export to Poland. Further arrivals in 2008/9 were reconditioned for AMT Montreal.

CDAC462 to 464 were originally intended to become CDAC475 to 477 but were never carried these numbers.
352 was selected to become CDAC464 but was never converted or re-numbered and may have been cut-up at Beech Grove.
All except CDAC460 (AMTK269) and CDAC463 (AMTK376) were delivered to the CDAC, 460 and 463 remained at Beech Grove. CDAC452 returned to Beech Grove by July 2002. CDAC463 moved to Joliet IL in 2001, without ever running with the CDAC.
CDAC460 (AMTK269) and CDAC452 (AMTK348) went to the Ohio Central RR. It is believed that CDAC460 (now OHCR460) went from Beech Grove directly to the OHCR.
In early 2004 a number of unconverted F40PH/PHRs went from Joliet IL to the MMA for storage at Derby ME: MMA226(AMTK216), 247, 260, 263, 273, 320, 339, 345, 391 along with CDAC463(AMTK376). CDAC463 moved again soon after. MMA226 had fire damage and had been stripped by March 2006, this is believed to have been renumbered from AMTK216. These later had their power units removed for export to Poland.
260, 263 and MMA/CDAC462(AMTK362) had their power units removed by early 2006. They were reclassified as "road slugs" and were planned to renumbered "AMTK" 440 to 442 (order of renumbering unknown). This renumbering did not take place. These three were reported (unconfirmed) as sold to SLRG (San Luis and Rio Grande) in early 2006, but this sale seems not to have taken place (see note on 245 below).
In April 2004 MMA/CDAC453(AMTK385), 456(378), 459(264) and 463(376) left the MMA and were reported at Gary IN in May 2004. 463 went to RELCO Minooka IL then to Harsco Track Technologies in June 2004 as HTT463/FTSX463. By March 2005 453, 456 and 459 were at Joliet IL, then in March 2006 moved to San Luis Rio Grande (SLRG) in Colorado along with 455(254). By August 2008 the only F40PH remaining on SLRG was 459. 453 had moved to an unknown location while 455 and 456 were on the West Texas and Lubbock. 459 was at Selkirk NY and then Berea OH in January 2009.
MMA/CDAC461 (266) was also reported as having left the MMA but was still at MMA Derby in December 2005.
MMA450 was active from October 2005, 451 was active in October, December 2005 and February 2006, 454 was active in November 2005 December 2005 and February 2006. 458 was operational in Maine in Feb 2005 and was used at Derby ME for switching in December 2005. MMA461 was active in April 2006.
Rail World 383 which had been leased to the American Orient Express was at MMA Derby by January 2006.
223 was moved from Joilet to Derby ME in October 2006 and 228 some time in late 2007. 227 also arrived on the MMA in 2007 and left for the SLRG in April 2008.
In July 2007 the MMA loaned on short term lease MMA/CDAC451 (AMTK314), 454 (AMTK384), 458 (AMTK360), 461(AMTK266), 450 (AMTK380) to Hudson's Bay Railway, The Pas, Manitoba, Canada (were active MMA). Following the lease four (451, 454, 458, 461) went to Iowa Northern (IANR) in mid/late November 2007.
245 arrived on the MMA in mid-2007 from Boise (was at IHB Riverdale IL, May 2007) and left for St Luc, Montreal in December 2007. In January 2008 it was moved with MMA/CDAC457 to Danville NY. 245 was repainted at Danville and converted to a road slug for SLRG.
Scrapping of 223 started at Derby ME in March 2008.
Following the sale of Ohio Central RR to Genesee and Wyoming in October 2008, OHCR452 (AMTK348) amd OHCR460 (AMTK269) went to Trackside Investments Sugarcreek, OH.
In July 2008 OHCR226, OHCR271, OHCR301 moved the Ohio Central RR to MMA Derby, having been sold by the OHCR to Rail World LL, 271 and 301 were rebuilt for AMT Montreal. These were joined by 2009 by the former NJT274, NJT302 and FLNX418(AMTK318) which were also rebuilt for AMT Montreal.
NJT/SLC270 and NJT/SLC293 and were rebuilt at NS Juniata for AMT Montreal in 2009.
365(VRE V33)was at MMA Derby being prepared for AMT Montreal as AMT330 in January 2010. This was followed by 392(VRE V31) in August 2010.
Despite being un-powered, NPCUs are maintained at locomotive shops and are still considered as part of the locomotive fleet.
NPCUs work as cab cars on push pull trains on the Downeaster and Cascades Services and on some services in the Mid-West.
From February 2006 one NPCU has been operating on Surfliner 799/798.
All NPCUs except those converted for the Pacific Northwest are fitted with roller shutter doors to allow the former engine compartment to be used for baggage.
Those converted for the Pacific Northwest (90230, 90250 to 90253, 90340) have a similar conversion to allow the engine compartment to be used for baggage but with a different door arrangement (no roller shutter). They are painted in Cascades livery to match the Talgo sets that they normally run with. As the Talgo sets have their own baggage area, these NPCUs are not normally used for baggage.
90220 was originally allocated to the Pacific Northwest, but was replaced by 90340 in 2001.
90208 moved from the Midwest to Surfliners in late 2005/early 2006.
Overhauls of these units commenced in late 2005 at Albany-R NY. The first three were repainted in Phase III while later overhauls at Albany have been repainted in Phase V. Those allocated to the Downeaster continue to have Downeaster markings on Phase V paint. 90221 was repainted to Phase V following wreck repair at Beech Grove.
278 and 413 were moved from storage at Bear DE to Beech Grove in late 2006 for conversion to NPCU. 90278 was completed in mid-2007 and in Midwest service November 2007 to January 2008, moving to Seattle for Cascades service in January 2008. 90413 was completed in January 2008 and in Midwest service in April 2008.
90278 is fitted with an auxillary air compressor.
90230 moved from Cascades to Midwest services in August 2008.
In August 2008 90225 was fitted with satellite tv transmitting antennas for use for live tv programming for ABC during mid September 2008. Most of the roof section was removed and two covered antennas fitted. After the assignment in mid-September the uplink equipment was removed and the unit returned to Beech Grove. It returned to Midwest service by November 2008.
90229 is the last survivor on Phase IV paint (it also carries Heartland Flyer logos). It ran regularly on the Heartland Flyer until mid-2009 when it was replaced by P32-8 500. It spent some time in reserve at Fort Worth, moved to Chicago in mid-2010, then to Beech Grove in December 2010.

At present these moves have ceased as the first overhaul cycle was completed in January 2007.

PS - Pacific Surfliner Pool (Los Angeles CA)

Allocated to Surfliner services based at Los Angeles. They work in push-pull mode on Pacific Surfliner services with a California cab car on the other end. A second locomotive may substitute for the cab car.
An extra Surfliner train (799/798) was added in November 2004, this usually uses an IC General Pool P42DC or a P32-8, an NPCU and Horizon cars.
Surfliner locomotives are often loaned to the Pacific Northwest. Change-over and maintenance movements between Los Angeles and Seattle are made by attaching the F59PHI to the Coast Starlight (Trains 11/14). In June 2004 465 was permanently transfered from Surfliner to Cascades Service. From that time there has often been one Surfliner on loan at a time, but occasionally additional loans have been neccessary resulting in up to three at a time in the North West.

CS - Pacific Northwest Cascades Pool (Seattle WA)

Allocated to Seattle to work all Talgo services in the Pacific Northwest. They work in push-pull mode with an ex-F40 cab car on the other end. They are regularly sent to Los Angeles for maintenance and repairs attached to the Coast Starlight (Trains 11/14).
At times P42DC's, P32-8's and Surfliner F59PHI's operate on Cascades services to subsitute for non-available units.

Similar locomotives operate Amtrak California services from Oakland/Sacramento but are owned by the State of California (see below), and two others are owned by the North Carolina DOT for the Piedmont service (see below).
Other non-Amtrak locomotives of this type are owned by AMT (Montreal), West Coast Express (Vancouver, Canada), GO Transit (Toronto), Coaster (California), Metrolink (California), Sounder (Seattle), Trinity Rail Express (Texas) and VRE (Virginia).
These were originally based in Chicago (for Midwest services) and Los Angeles (for West Coast services). From around 2000 several were also allocated to New Orleans. Many of them were used at various locations for mail and express switching and standby power.
They were originally fitted with ditch lights at the cab end only, but 512, 513, 515 were fitted with ditch lights at both ends by 2006. They have been fitted to both ends on all Phase V overhauls from 2006.
The use and locations for these locomotives can vary according to day to day requirements.
501 and 502 are now CDTX 2051 and 2052 (see California locomotives below)

Used for road power, switching duties and standby power. Most are based at Chicago IL, with single units at Miami FL, Sanford FL and New Orleans LA (regular use at Jacksonville FL has ceased).
Prior to August 2005, those in Florida and at New Orleans were maintained at New Orleans, since then their maintenance allocation has moved to Chicago.
From the end of August 2005 to October 2005, 511 was used as a stationary generator at New Orleans station following power outages from Hurricane Katrina.
From April 2010 500 has been assigned to work the Heartland Flyer and to run on Bio-diesel.
Maintenance change-over moves are often made between Chicago and New Orleans (on the City of New Orleans) and between Chicago and Florida (on the Capitol Limited and Silver service or Auto Train).

NS - NEC MoW Pool (Wilmington DE)

512 and 513 were sent in late 2003 to Wilmington DE for possible use on NS Test Freights, but P40s were used instead and these two remained at Wilmington for use on MoW trains. They were later joined by the 514. They occasionally go to Chicago for maintenance or repairs. At most times two are allocated to MoW service from Philadelphia with the third allocated as standby and road power from Washington DC.

These locomotives are fitted for dual mode operation and can operate as a diesel locomotive or they can draw current from third rail electrified tracks. Pick-up shoes are normally set to over-running collection, but can be turned for under-running.

125th St - NY Grand Central (MNCR track, only used by Amtrak for rare diversions)
Diesel powered trains do not operate under diesel power in the tunnels either side of New York Penn station, nor in the station itself except for emergencies. All trains on the Hudson route to and from Albany NY are powered by P32ACDM dual mode electro-diesels, they operate from third rail electric power in the approach tunnel from the Hudson line and in the station area. Empty workings of these trains to Sunnyside Yard also use third rail electric power through the East River Tunnels.
A similar restrcition on diesel power is in place at New York Grand Central station and the approach tunnels. Although this station no longer has any Amtrak scheduled services, trains from the Hudson route have diverted to Grand Central on rare occasions with the electro-diesels using third rail power in a similar way to those of the Metro North RR. Amtrak Diversions in 2008 attached an MNCR dual-mode locomotive to provide power, this avoided the need to adjust the third rail pick-up shoes for under-running collection.
The most recent overhaul cycle of this type was completed between 2002 and 2005 (700, 706, 713 in FY2005).

ND - NEC Hudson Route Dual-Mode Pool (Albany-R NY)

They are all based at Albany-RSR NY and work on all trains between Albany and New York City.
On the longer distance trains continuing north of Albany they are usually exchanged for a P42 locomotive at Albany, as there is a need to maximise their availability for use south of Albany. They usually continue north and west of Albany on trains to Rutland and Niagara Falls, and very occasionally to Montreal and Toronto without a locomotive change at Albany.

Other non-Amtrak locomotives of this type are owned by Metro North RR and Connecticut DOT.
When new this type operated mainly on long distance services, based in New Orleans and Los Angeles. They also worked the Auto Train.
819 was wrecked within days of entering service in 1993 and has been scrapped.
807 and 829 were severely damaged in a wreck in March 1999. The remains of these two were at Beech Grove for some time to around 2003 but had gone by October 2006. Two additional P42DCs were ordered as replacements.
In late October and early November 2003 NS operated a test express freight service, Trains 25A/26A, between the Newark NJ area and Atlanta GA. The later test runs were powered by two Amtrak P40 locomotives (with a third NS locomotive) between New Jersey and Alexandria VA. 814 and 837 operated on this service, 823 was originally assigned to this but was replaced by 814.
830 was leased to VRE Virginia between late 2003 and early 2004. 830 was used for work trains between June and early November 2004 and was then stored.
804 may have been used for work trains in May 2004 (unconfirmed).
814 and 837 were sent to store at Bear DE in February 2004 and then worked MoW trains around Philadelphia in March and April 2004. 823 also worked MoW trains around Philadelphia in April 2004. 814 and 823 then moved back north to Albany NY, but in July 2004 814 returned to Philadelphia for Harrisburg passenger runs and was later stored. 837 worked at least one trip on the Pennsylvanian in May and works trains in July and September, it returned to Albany NY in October 2004.
In early November 2004 five from those remaining on the NEC were sent to store at Bear DE or Wilmington DE leaving only one, 828, in NEC service. 817, 823, 827 were sent from Albany NY to store at Wilmington DE. 824 went from Albany to Washington DC and 837 to Philadelphia before being stored at Wilmington/Bear DE by January 2005. 828 continued to run on New England services during November 2004, being used on the New Haven - Springfield service until the end of November 2004 when it was sent from Albany NY to store at Wilmington DE.
817 and 827 were reported on work train service in the NEC during January 2005, 817, 825, 827, 832 and 835 during March, 837 in June, 817 in July, 835 and 839 in August, 832 in October 2005.
In March 2005 the eleven in the Auto Train pool (832 to 836, 838 to 843) were transfered to General Pool duties from New Orleans, but after a short period these were stored.
All those stored are allocated to Wilmington for maintenance, and normally stored at Bear. They do move occasionally between Wilmington and Bear for maintenance.
808, 810, 812 and 820 were moved in February 2007 from store at Bear DE to Beech Grove. After overhaul and delivery to NJT they were renumbered in NJT4800 series, 812 to NJT4800, 808 to NJT4801, 810 to NJT4802, 820 to NJT4803.
Completed 812 moved to GE Erie in August 2007 and to New Jersey in September, 808 to New Jersey in August/September 2007, 810 Beech Grove to New Jersey in September 2007. 820 Beech Grove to New Jersey in September/October 2007. All were repainted at Beech Grove in NJT scheme. Until delivery to NJT their then future NJT numbers were temporarily covered with original Amtrak numbers as they were not officially renumbered until delivered.
In March 2009 plans were published for the overhaul at Beech Grove and return to service for 15 of this type: 814, 815, 816, 817, 818, 821, 822, 823, 824, 830, 831, 832, 835, 837 (and one other listed at first as 807, an error for 809).

From 20th August 2004, prior to the aquisition of 599, a prototype Green Goat, RPRX2001, built by RailPower Technologies Corp., was leased to Amtrak for 60 days for trial use in the Washington DC area.
RPPX2001 remained in RailPower Technologies Corp. green while on lease to Amtrak.
From December 2006 599, on lease from Railpower Hybrid Technologies and financed by a State Grant from the California South Coast Air Quality Management District, was at Los Angeles Redondo for intended use as a switcher, but it was never in general use. It was sent to City Of Industry CA in January 2008. The lease on this unit ceased and in June 2008 it was renumbered to RPRX2406 and leased to UP at West Colton CA.

On 29th October 2010 Amtrak announced the purchase of 70 new electric locomotives for its Northeast intercity passenger rail services. The contract was awarded to Siemens. The first Amtrak Cities Sprinter ACS-64 electric locomotive is planned to be delivered in February 2013.
As the new units come into service, Amtrak plans first to retire all current 20 DC AEM-7 electric locomotives in its fleet, followed by replacement of all 29 AC AEM-7 units. The remaining 21 locomotives of the order will be used to replace all 15 HHP-8 locomotives with the additional units supporting anticipated service expansion.

These locomotives are owned by the State of California and normally do not leave the State.
The first batch (2001 to 2009) were delivered with bodyside fluting to match the then new California cars, but without strobe beacons.
They were joined in late 2001 by 2010 to 2015 which were delivered in modified Amtrak California livery, without bodyside fluting and with two strobe beacons attached to the cab roof.
2001 to 2009 went to MPI for a first major overhaul between 2001 and January 2004, repainted in the modified scheme and the bodyside fluting was removed.
2015 was fitted with Tier 2 power unit by EMD in early 2009 and carries "repower 710ECO" logos on the sides.

Amtrak also provides maintenance services for Sounder (Seattle) and locomotive power (P42DC) for some excursion trains.
Amtrak's locomotive leasing business was acquired by Rail Word Locomotive Leasing in early 2002; at that time most those on existing leases (F40s) were acquired by Rail World LL.
From time to time locomotives owned by commuter agencies may be moved to and from workshops and manufacturers attached to Amtrak trains. The most common of these moves are Caltrain locomotives moving within the San Francisco Bay Area and to Los Angeles or Rosewell CA attached to Trains 11/14 or Capitol Corridor services.
Locomotives from freight railroads are hired on occasion to rescue Amtrak trains when locomotive failures occur. Freight locomotives have been known on rare occasions to rescue Amtrak electric trains on the NEC during power failures or damage to overhead catenary wires.
Switchers were leased for use at some locations, but this has now ceased.
On either side of the Thanksgiving holiday, the extra trains run on the NEC; some use locomotives and cars loaned from commuter agencies (mainly NJT, SEPTA and MARC).
From mid-2003 some Clocker services (New York Penn. - Philadelphia) were hauled by New Jersey Transit ALP-46 locomotives. At the end of October 2005 this service transfered to NJ Transit entirely.
In August 2004, two NS locomotives (2218, 2922) were on hire to Amtrak for works trains in the south of NEC.
A Green Goat hybrid yard switcher, RPRX2001, built by RailPower Technologies Corp., was leased to Amtrak for 60 days for use in the Washington DC area from 20th August 2004.
NS GP40-2's 3029 and 3031 were leased for MoW work in NEC South MOW from September 2009.
In June 2011 NJT ALP44 electrics 4402 4403 4408 4410 were leased to tow MOW trains through the Hudson Tunnels in New York City.
20 8-car sets (Power cars 2000-2039)
Artist's drawings published before the sets were delivered showed a power car numbered 890.
Prior to entering service several temporary test sets were formed with various configurations. A number of reformations took place before these sets entered service.
The cars remain in fixed sets but there is no pattern to the car numbers in relation to the set numbers.
Operate on the NEC between Washington DC, New York and Boston.
Until October 2006 they were maintained by Northeast Corridor Maintenance Service Company (NECMSC).
10003 is a track geometry test car which is added to existing sets from time to time, when not in use it is normally at Ivy Yard, Washington DC.

Talgo sets include a generator car for train supply and operate with F59PHI locomotives and Non Passenger Cab Units (ex F40PHR) on Cascades Services in Pacific Northwest. They are maintained by Talgo under contract at Seattle.
They were delivered as four semi-permanent articulated 12-car sets in green Cascades paint scheme, additionally there were five spare cars. They were joined by a fifth 14-car set in a blue paint scheme; this had been used as a demonstration set and at one time it was planned to be used on a service between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Two of the 12-car sets were made up to 13-car sets by adding one car from the spares to each. Much later in November 2004 two cars were removed from the 14-car set (following the set's repaint to Cascades green). These two cars were then added one to each of the 12-car sets to make all four original sets 13-car.
They are currently formed into five semi-permanent articulated sets, four with 13 cars, one with 12 cars.
Some cars are spare at Seattle.
The 13-car sets are in the green Cascades livery and are named; the names are carried on the side of the generator cars.
“Mt. Hood” and “Mt. Olympus” are owned by Amtrak. Many, but not all, of the cars in the “Mt Hood” set are numbered with the last digit as “0”, while many in “Mt Olympus” end in “3”. These ran as 12 cars sets until November 2004, when one car was added to each.
“Mt. Baker” and “Mt. Rainier” are owned by Washington State. Many, but not all, of the cars in the “Mt Baker” set are numbered with the last digit as “1”, while many in “Mt Rainier” end in “2”.
They normally operate on a fixed four-day cycle around all Cascades services excluding the daily train to Vancouver BC.
The original 14-car set was unofficially referred to as the “Las Vegas” set before repainting, but this name was never carried. Many of the cars in this set are numbered with “4” as the final digit.
This set normally works the daily service between Seattle and Vancouver BC; it was owned Talgo and leased to Amtrak but was acquired by Washington State in 2003.
It was overhaulled and repainted to Cascades green in October 2004 and was named "Mt Adams". After this two cars were removed to make it a 12-car set.
Some cars have been changed around between sets, but as the sets are articulated, these changes are only made on rare occasions. The set names are carried on the side of the generator cars, but these cars have moved between sets and the names have been changed on these cars to match the set. These moves add difficultly with any historical records that only refer to the sets by their names or by the generator car number only.
Cascades Talgos were out of service for mechanical checks and repairs, replaced by Amfleet and Superliner cars, from early August 2007, and phased back into service from the end of September 2007. Some further reformation of the consists occured during this period.

Amfleet-I cars, some designated as Metroliner cars, work on internal services within the NEC (except for those worked by Acela Express sets) and on the Carolinan. A few are based in Chicago for Midwest services and, from November 2006, they are occasionally used on specials and extras on the West Coast.
Amfleet-II cars work on longer distance services between New York and Chicago, Miami, Pittsburgh, Savannah GA, Toronto and New Orleans.
Superliner cars work on long distance services west to/from Chicago, also the City of New Orleans (Chicago - New Orleans), the Sunset Limited (Los Angeles - New Orleans), the Coast Starlight (Los Angeles - Seattle), the Capitol Limited (Chicago - Washington DC) and the Auto Train (Lorton VA - Sanford FL).
Superliner-I Auto Train Lounges operate on the Auto Train.
Superliner-II Sleeper and Coach cars normally operate on the Auto Train, Sunset Limited and Coast Starlight but do stray onto other routes.
Superliner-II Deluxe Sleeper cars operate on the Auto Train.
Superliner-II Family Coach cars (“Kiddie Cars”) operate on the Coast Starlight.
Super-Smoker cars are being converted back to Coach-Baggage cars and revert to former numbers.
Superliner Transition Dorms operate on services with a baggage car between the locomotive and Superliner passenger cars. They have gangways at a low level at one end to connect with the baggage car and a high level gangway at the other to connect with Superliner cars. The sleeper accomodations were intended for train crew use only, but on some services the sleeper cabins are allocated to revenue passengers.
Superliner Diner/Lounges operate (from late October 2007) on the City of New Orleans (Chicago - New Orleans).
Some Superliner cars have been fitted with push-pull working. These cars occasionally substitute on Surfliner and California services. In winter Superliner cars are used on some services in the Midwest. They are now also used on the Heartland Flyer.
Superliner cars cannot operate at certain locations on the NEC due to restricted clearances.
From mid-2007 a number of Superliner I coach cars were re-painted and renumbered (in the 349xx series) for a six-year lease to Amtrak California.

Viewliner sleepers run on the Lake Shore Limited (New York - Chicago), the Crescent (New York - New Orleans), the Cardinal (New York - Washington DC - Chicago) and New York - Florida Silver services.

Horizon Coaches work mainly on Midwest services from Chicago. There are some on the West Coast operating one Surfliner duty. Horizon cars are often used for special trains or charters throughout the system.
Train 79/80 (The Carolinian) and the Cardinal (New York - Washington DC - Chicago) have Horizon Dinettes.
Former Metroliner cab cars are used on the Springfield MA - New Haven CT shuttle service, and from September 2006 on the Keystone services (full service from October 30th 2006). Recent overhauls have been refurbished and modified to operate with electric locomotives. They are also used on the Vermonter at times.

California cars work on Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin services from the San Francisco Bay Area. They include cab cars for push-pull working. Single Superliner cars may occasionally substitute for these cars.

Surfliner cars work Surfliner services in southern California. They include cab cars for push-pull working. Some cars, built as part of the Surfliner order, work on Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin services and are painted in Amtrak California scheme. Single Superliner cars may occasionally substitute for these cars.
An extra Surfliner train was added in November 2004 operated push-pull by two P42DCs, or a P42DC and NPCU, with Horizon cars.
A small number of Heritage cars remain in service. Overhauls ceased on most types of Heritage cars in mid-2006 (except for Pacific Parlours), most will be retired as they become due for overhaul or heavy repair.
Diner cars run on the Crescent (New York - New Orleans) and New York - Florida Silver services. Their use on the Lake Shore Limited (New York - Chicago) ceased by October 2007.
Hi-level Lounges (Pacific Parlours) operate on the Coast Starlight (Los Angeles - Seattle), in early/mid 2008 they were overhauled at Beech Grove.
10031 Heritage Dome Car usually based on the West Coast and running occasionally on special trains. Since 2006 this has been used in various parts of the system. Used in the Fall of 2007 and 2008 on the Adirondack.
1100, 1200 series Baggage cars, 1700 series Baggage cars (converted from Coach cars), 1750 series Mail cars (also Coach conversions) and 1850 series Baggage cars operate mainly on long distance services.
1400 series Material Handling Cars have been sold.
1500 series Material Handling Cars, none remain active.

MoW Cars
There is a wide variety of MoW cars and track maintenance machines; they are used for MoW purposes on Amtrak owned tracks in the NEC. These include Hoppers, Flat Cars and a few Cabooses as well as some self-propelled track machines. Some staff accommodation cars and overhead line maintenance cars were converted from former passenger cars.

In 2005 there were two GE-80 ton switchers, numbered 10 and 11 at Beech Grove IN and also a roadrailer device for shop movements at Ivy Yard, Washington DC. A switcher numbered 1100 in recent Phase V paint was noted at Beech Grove in November 2005 and in 2006/7, this appears to be a renumbering of 11. 1000 in recent Phase V paint was noted at Beech Grove in July 2007, this appears to be a renumbering of 10.

760 to 763 were leased from Precision National for switching in Chicago until 1977 when they were acquired by Amtrak. 762 and 763 moved to Los Angeles, while 760 and 761 remained in Chicago (760 until at least 1981, 761 until at least 1990). 760 was moved to Washingon DC by 1994. 761 to 763 were the first to be retired and scrapped (early 1990s?).
764 to 783 were acquired by Amtrak 1978 from SLSF, N&W, UP, C&NW, L&N, and rebuilt at Silvis IL. They were used for work trains and switching on the NEC. 780 was retired and sold sometime around 1994. 764 to 776, 779, 781 to 783 remained in use beyond 2000 and were retired between 2002 and 2005, although many were stored out of use for some time before formal retirement.
784 was acquired in 1987 from Washington Terminal (ex WT 80). This may not have ever carried Amtrak markings or numbers.
There is conflicting information as to the type of most of these. Exterior visual identification adds to the confusion as some had the bodywork of one type and the inner equipment of the other as a result of rebuilds.

All have been withdrawn from Amtrak service and were scrapped by the end of 2003 (except for two preserved).
There were originally 26 E60s and they have undergone conversions and re-numberings over the years.
The order was split between class E60CP units with steam generators and E60CH units with Head-End Power.
They were originally ordered as 15 E60CP (950-964) and 11 E60CH (965-975). The mix of CP/CH units was changed shortly after the order was begun resulting in 6 E60CP (950-955) and 19 E60CH (956-975). As a result of individual unit production progress two units "exchanged" road numbers prior to delivery to Amtrak: E60CP 951 became E60CH 957 E60CP 957 became E60CP 951
Ten of them, 958 to 963, 967, 971 to 973 all E60CH, went to NJ Transit in 1983 on lease and were then sold to NJT in 1984; all of these have been scrapped except for 958 stored for preservation. 961 went to the Navajo Mine RR in 1995, was renumbered to 23 and scrapped in December 2003.
966 and 968 were sold to the Navajo Mine RR by 1984. 966 was renumbered to 20 and by 2003 was cannabalised for parts, 968 was renumbered to 21 and scrapped in December 2003.
Between 1986 and 1988, those that remained with Amtrak were rebuilt, reclassified and renumbered.
All E60CPs had their boilers removed, and four of these had HEP fitted.
Those with HEP, both the E60CHs and the converted E60CPs, were rebuilt and renumbered as E60MA in the 600 series.
Those remaining E60CHs without HEP were to be renumbered into the 510 series but soon after 950 was renumbered to 510, this was changed to the 620 series as 510 caused confusion with the E44 class. It may have reverted to 950 for a while before becoming 620.

There is an alternative version of the re-numberings that states that 954 became 608 and 952 was the one retired before renumbering, however there are reports of 954 being at Wilmington after 608 emerged so this does not appear to be correct.
Until early-2003 the remaining active E60MA’s worked between Philadelphia and New York on Trains 40, 41, 89, 90, 91 and 92. They also appeared on some Clocker or Keystone trains from time to time and were also used for Circus Train moves through New York City tunnels. They were withdrawn or stored in stages during 2002/2003 and scrapped in 2003 except for 603 (retained for preservation). The two E60s 620 and 621 were without Head End Power for passenger cars; they were based at Wilmington DE and saw only occasional use on MoW and service trains.
4 E60s (unidentified) were reported at Bethlehem PA awaiting movement to Naporano scrap NJ on 26th Nov 2003. Soon after 4 E60s were reported at Oak Island Yard (1st Dec) and identified as 604, 608, 609, 610 (with temporary reporting marks MLMX).

Built in the 1970's as RTL (RTL-I) sets and numbered 150 to 163 (power cars) and 170 to 190 (cafe/coaches).
One set was rebuilt as an RTL-II in 1995.
Rebuilds of all the fleet to RTL-IIIs was started at Super Steel, Schenectady NY, but only three units were completed before the project was put on hold and later cancelled.
The RTL-II set and all RTL-III rebuilds were renumbered to avoid duplication with P42DC locomotives.
Two refurbished RTL-III sets, 2135-2158 and 2141-2162, were operational for a period on the Empire Service and a third refurbished RTL-III set, 2143-2150, was delivered to Albany in September 2003.
Both operational units were taken out of traffic in the early summer of 2004 and were stored intially at Albany NY. All three RTL-III sets were removed from the roster in August 2004 and moved to store at Bear DE in September 2004. The un-completed units remained at Super Steel, Schenectady NY. In April 2008 all were offered for sale.

The Auto Train terminals at Lorton Va and Sanford FL had their own switchers prior to the service being operated by Amtrak. Some of these may have survived after Amtrak took over the service in 1983. Auto-Train S-2 625 was at Lorton VA in 1978, Baldwins 621, 622, 624 in 1977.

Heater Cars acquired 1972 from BN, converted from F3B, were originally numbered by Amtrak as 1910-1915, were later renumbered to 660 to 665 retired 1984/85 (except 664 wreck in 1979).
Amtrak E9B 468, 469, 456, 463, 466, 467 were converted to Heater Cars 1916 to 1921 and were later renumbered to 666 to 671.
Amtrak E8A 318, 316, 299, 303, 314 were converted to Heater Cars 1922 to 1926 and were later renumbered to 672 to 676.
Amtrak E9A 400 became Fuel Tender 470.
SDP40F 500 to 649, built:1973/74.
511, 526, 615, 622, 628 to 630, 632 to 635, 638 to 640, 643 to 645, 649 to ATSF in 1984 in exchange for CF-7s and SSB1200s, then scrapped 2002 except for BNSF6876/ATSF5266/AMTK644 preserved in Northwest Rail Museum, Portland OR.
520 destroyed in a grade crossing collision on 15 Dec 1976.
All others traded for rebuild to F40PHRs

All others retired late 1991/92 and scrapped 1992. Delivered in Phase II paint, all except 713 and 715 repainted to Phase III.
An order for a further 25 P30CH's numbered 725 to 749 was cancelled.

GP40M 650 to 664, leased from HELM, ex-Conrail/PRR/MILW/SOO, 1991 to 1993. Returned to HELM and rebuilt as HLCX42xx and HLCX44xx. Some are now with WMAX and renumbered in the WMAX404x series. Many still retain the grey paint from their time with Amtrak with patched logos and numbers.
